Cartersville-Bartow County Crime Stoppers is a non-profit community action program dedicated to the apprehension of criminals through anonymous tips and rewards. Crime Stoppers provides a way for concerned citizens of Bartow County to do their part to fight crime by anonymously providing local law enforcement agencies with information on crimes or suspects. Cartersville-Bartow Crime Stoppers is not a division of any law enforcement agency but a collective effort by concerned private citizens. We are supported by local media, law enforcement, businesses and individuals within the community. A volunteer civilian Board of Directors governs Crime Stoppers.
Crime Stoppers began in 1976 in New Mexico when a young man was murdered but there was no one to offer any information. A detective decided to offer an anonymous hotline and whoever gave the information that led to the arrest of the murderer would receive a reward. Coincidentally, a witness recalled seeing a car leaving the scene and knew where the car was kept. This tip led to the arrest and conviction of the murderer.
Through December of 2009, tips to the Cartersville-Bartow County Crime Stoppers have cleared over 50 cases leading to 35 arrests and recovering over $625,000 dollars of property and drugs seized. Cartersville-Bartow County Crime Stoppers has paid out almost $3000 in rewards to anonymous "tipsters" who provided the information to trained detectives that operate the clearinghouse.
